General and personified directionology

We distinguish between general and personified directionology. Here, we are interested in how our personal Qi interacts with the general directional Qi.

The key question in directionoly is: “How does my own personal Qi resonate with a given environmental Qi”

Although the outcome would still be different in each individual case, certain directions can be classified auspicious or inauspicious no matter your astrological sign.

An example is, that - irrespective of my own Number – I want to know in which direction Number 5 is.

In whichever direction Number 5 is in the Luo Shu, we know that it is not advisable to travel into that direction. Travelling in opposite direction to where the 5 is in the Luo Shu is regarded even worse.

As a consequence, it would also not be advisable to sit, work, sleep or take initiatives into these directions. Apart from other more individual rules, this is a basic technique which is true for all of us.

Let us first concentrate on the basic Luo Shu for some basic general directionology.

This example ignores specific Qi for any year and does not consider personal Qi yet. The examples given here are just to give you a basic idea on directionology, so please be advised that this is the most basic and most static form of directionology and you may not follow up on the advice given in this section, unless you otherwise made sure that the direction mentioned here are not inauspicious for the Qi of a year, your personal Qi and furthermore that these directions do not disagree with the Xuan Kong Feng Shui flying star chart of your house.

The next section shows the basic Qi of the eight directions, not how your personal element will react to this Qi. If you are a 6 Metal, apart from what is being mentioned under South, you will be moving towards a Fire direction and Fire is controlling your basic energy. The Fire controlling your basic energy may or may not be desirable, because this depends not only on your Nine Star Ki Numbers, but also on your Four Pillars of Destiny chart and your physical and emotional well-being.

In Four Pillars of Destiny, other rules and dynamics prevail that may or may not agree with the principles discussed here.

Basic directionology

The basic Luo Shu has Number 5 in the center and it is this square we refer back to, whichever other Number may be occupying the square for a year, month, day or hour. 3 Wood is always in the East, 9 Fire is always in the South. Luo Shu shows the Numbers in their static positions and is said to more or less accurately resemble China’s topography: mountains to the Northeast, yellow soil in central China etc.. We have to adjust according to our own localities, but the Luo shu also follows the sun pattern and this bit can be applied in basic directionology.

East
Dominating trigram is Thunder (Zhen), giving the idea of impuls and sudden action. We have sunrise in the East, which makes this direction one for growth and emerging warmth. As a reaction to sunrise, nature is triggered to come alive again and if we want to tap into this creative energy, we may sit facing East or move into the East. If we need to tap into the world of ideas, impuls, communication, inventions, any short projects – like in certain professions – we may consider locating our desk in the East.

East is also the time of Spring. Spring is clearly the time after Winter and Midwinter, so also the time when contemplation, withdrawal, is behind us and the East may be used for our forward and outward initiatives. East is a good direction for pioneering and new beginnings. 3 Wood is the time for emerging yang. Yang emerging is found in anything, like herbs. If you want to leave Winter behind, you may go outside and collect herbs. Young herbs may appear tiny, yet they already contain the Qi of the fully grown plant. If you take in herbs when they are still in their sprouting stage you will absorb their potential growth and therefore the ability to finish your projects. Some way of bringing your Qi in resonance with the environmental Qi.

Southeast
Trigram is Wind (Xun) and like the East, Southeast is good for growth, because it depicts Late Spring or Early Summer. Xun is good for initiative that you like to see branched out into several directions and for social activities., like expressing yourself in front of an audience. Direction of patience and compassion.

South
Trigram is Fire (Li) and it is the direction of fully grown energy. Fire is high Summer. South is good for planning, as the sun has the property of overlooking everything. Flames can be seen from over a wide distance, so it is said South is good for presentations, fame, motion, passion and going into the world to meet new challenges and people.

Southwest
Trigram Earth (Kun) or mother. Direction for fruition and consolidation, Late Summer. Good to concentrate on studies and withdrawing for self-education while still very much in contact with your community. If the creative stages of East and Southeast have gone in a desirable way, and your planning was done right, the Southwest will ensure healthy fruit and good preperation for harvest. Good direction if you seek stability, and for conventional activities that do not allow to much suprises like meetings and team building.

West

Trigram Marsh (Dui) or Lake. Sun is lower in the skies as Early Autumn arrived. It is not time to harvest yet, but it is a good direction for evaluation of past and future. Direction for philosophical reflections, but still very much on the light side. Good direction for consolidating your love relationship. This direction is said to give good financial results.

Northwest
Trigram Heaven (Qian). This is a good direction if you need to tap into mechanical thinking and masterminding. If you need to be orderly and disciplined, the Northwest provides the necessary Qi because it carries the cutting energy of Autumn. Good direction whenever ethical thinking and leadership is required. Good for order, employement or expanding your business.

North
Trigram Water (Kan) and season of Winter and withdrawal of Qi. This direction is not favourite for any outward initiative, but it is great for any inner initiative. Temperature in the North is cold, so it is a good direction if your love relationship needs mending. You’ll sit and sleep tightly together. Good direction for maintenance and contemplation. Good for recluse, like when you need to think things over or want to produce writings.

Northwest
Trigram Mountain (Gen) and Midwinter. Good direction to focuss on future matters, just before the beginning of Spring and yet another impuls.

Good direction if you need to burn old ships and need to really let go of things that had been frustrating a fresh start.

Again, this will only give you a basic sense of direction, timing and Qi resonance. You may not blindly use these directions or use them as the foundations for any of your initiatives. Many different considerations come into play, like when you are travelling or choose to have your residence in the Northwest, what other features are there in your destination. Northwest is 6 Metal, but are you also travelling towards a mountainous area or towards the sea.

Basically, Qi is waxing in the Northeast, East, Southeast and South, providing a good layer for activities that ask for social communication, impuls, creativity and outward action. Southwest, West, Northwest and North show waning Qi, giving good foundation to more yang, stable and carefully planned activities.

The center depicts stability, but it is an undesirable position to locate yourself in within a building because all energies gather in the center, probably giving you a feeling of restlessness and weakening your ability to focuss on any particular subject. In general, it is better not to travel when your Number is in the center of the Luo Shu, although in some months it can be done.
