Directionology
by Xi Lu

Both Feng Shui and Nine Star Ki are concerned with directionology for travelling, initiative and placement.

Directionology deals with the positioning and changing properties of objects and living beings as they move through space and time.

In Nine Star Ki your auspicious and inauspicious directions for travelling or initiatives are found, based on your personal Numbers.

In Nine Star Ki, each one of us has three Numbers. In the most widespread form of Nine Star Ki, one Number for the year of birth, one for the month of birth and a third Number, but not originated from your day of birth. If you do not know your three Nine Star Ki Numbers, we will show you here.

Directionology is based on the notion that there is interaction between the earth magnetism and human magnetism. Magnetism is ever changing as it answers to dynamics of Time and Space.

To determine (in)auspicious time and direction we may use the Magic Square, Luo Shu. In the Luo Shu (combinations of) Stars for a year, month or day show ever changing Qi patterns. Each of us reacts differently to specific Qi qualities coming towards us from different directions.

Without you having to physically move an inch, each year, month, day and hour your Numbers occupy another direction in the Luo Shu. This is the Time aspect in directionology. Physically positioning – locating - yourself relative to any direction or actively moving into a certain direction or even away from a certain direction is the Space dimension in directionology.

Basically the difference of how we react to or interact with directional Qi is shown through our individual Nine Star Ki Numbers, but these are by themselves not sufficient to show how different people react to the same ingredients of Time and Space, which this article will show. We will discuss how to use Nine Star Ki, in order to find which years, months, days or hours are auspicious or inauspicious for any given person, time, direction, location or initiative.

Be advised that any location, direction or time, said to be your worst or best in one system, could show the exact opposite outcome when you consulted another system or resource.

Besides the ones discussed here, and used in Feng Shui and Nine Star Ki, there are many other systems for directionology, both occidental and oriental.

Also be advised that Nine Star Ki does not distinguish between Numbers for males and females, whereas this has been convention in the Chinese Ming Gua system for directionology and compatibility used in Feng Shui branches.

Since we are dealing with magnetic fields, we do not use any maps to determine direction. Maps usually show geographical (true) North, so we use an actual compass to determine directions or magnetic North and adjust any maps we use.

Qi at birth

At birth you took in your first breath. This breath is the first of probably the two single most important breathing sessions in your lifetime.

Many people ask ‘why’ does astrology work. ‘How’ does destiny come about.

Many answers can be found but – to give an example of probably the most significant consideration -, it is said that, if you took one of your body cells and examined its patterns through a microscope, and you would compare the stars at the sky at the moment of your first breath, they are a match.

In other words, your first breath fixates the stars and planets in the heavens at the time of your birth. It is the moment the stars of your astrological chart are ‘burnt in’ and the moment your meridians are triggered. Until that time you solely depended on the Qi and destiny of your mother.

Your first breath defines your own basic Qi resonance and how you react to Qi of Time and Space. That this points to your basic Qi resonance only is important, because during the course of your life many factors may change this. We should therefore be careful not to take a person’s birth chart, palm lines or whatever else and work from the idea that the whole picture is being revealed before you. Only staying with our red blood cells, we produce 200 billion new ones every day.

We study Yi – change – and throughout our lives we change our inborn constitution and condition.

In other words, you took in the Qi of different sources.

Heaven Qi Time factor. Influence of Sun, planets and trillions of stars.
Man Qi Internal influence having come from your mother’s food- and blood quality.
Own Qi quality determining how you react to changing Qi of Time and Space.
Earth Qi Earth magnetic field. Any significant environmental reality i.e. locality, climate, season, temperature, Moisture, smell.

It is exactly our personal physical and emotional condition of each moment that is crucial in understanding how and why different people react differently to the same Time or Space directionology.

The same destination may bring balance to one person and may topple the balance in another person, depending on yin or yang resonance of the direction and the yin or yang condition of the traveller.

The intensity of your own magnetic field – generated and maintained by your diet – may or may not be in line with the intensity of environmental Qi.

Of nine Numbers, certain Numbers are more yin, like 9 and 2, others are more yang, like 6 and 1. Number 5 is by far the most yang direction to be dealing with, because it is where Qi gathers.

Any direction does not exist without its opposite. If you look at the planet as a huge magnet, it will have a plus pole and a minus pole, or a yang pole and a yin pole. It is no different with the plus and minus poles of our bodies and the same goes for the energies shown by the Luo Shu.

Opposite directions in the Luo Shu always complement each other and should be considered simultaneously. If you travel into a yang direction, the effect on body and mind will be yang. If you travel into a yin direction, the effect on body and mind will be yin.

Finding Your Nine Star Ki Number

First you need to find your own three Nine Star Ki Numbers and use the tables on the next page.

First Number Determined by the Qi of your year of birth. Your driving force or your inner most path of destiny. Mostly comparable - but not to be mistaken with - your sun sign in occidental astrology.
Second Number Determined by the Qi of your month of birth. Comparable with your moonsign. Also called ‘child’ Number, because it shows how you perceived the world during childhood. It also shows emotions and temperament when under stress or in a dependent situation in adult life.
Third Number Comparable with your ascendent in western astrology. It shows how others may perceive you. Sometimes called ‘destiny’ Number because it is claimed by some that it shows your goal in later life and how you go about things in daily life.

For directionology purposes 5 Earth males adopt the 2 Earth Number and 5 Earth females adopt the 8 Earth Number. 5 Earth people travelling into the direction of Number 5 are therefore not ‘travelling towards their own Number’.

Your third Number is not used to define character, and also not for divination or directionology.

For directionology, both your first and second Numbers are used. Note however that there is a distinct difference in effect when your first Number travels into a certain direction, than when your second Number travels into a certain direction.

We need to really study dynamics of first and second Numbers in order to have a good idea of their difference, something this article will not allow. However, your first Number dominates your professional – outward -, life more, whilst your second Number dominates your inner – emotional - life more.

Finging your first Number
Look up your year of birth in this table. Shown are years from 1910-2008. Please note that a Nine Star Ki year runs from either 4 or 5 February of any given year, until 3 or 4 February of the following year. If you were born anywhere between 1 January and 3 or 4 February, you need to consider yourself as having been born in the previous year. Years given in bold face started 5 Februari.

Finding your second Number
Use the second column if your first Number is either 1,4 or 7 and find your second Number against your month of birth. If your first Number is 3,6 or 9 use the third column and when your first Number is 2,5 or 8 use the fourth column. Be advised that a Nine Star Ki month starts anywhere between 4th and 9th. If you are born between the 1st or 9th of a month you may need to add one Number. For verification you may e-mail Xi Lu with your time and place of birth.

Basic Luo Shu setting

This is the basic Luo Shu setting. It has 5 in the center. Because all Numbers can occupy the center, there are nine different squares. Starting from the center, the Numbers fly Norhtwest – West – Northeast – South – North – Southwest – Southeast and East. This is known as the ‘path of Saturn’ and the Luo Shu is sometimes referred to as ‘Saturn square’. It may show the natural waxing and waning of Qi on our planet. The sun rises in the East, bringing Spring, growth and warmth. The seasons can be followed in a clock-wise order going from Early Spring (3), Later Spring (4), Summer (9), Late Summer (2), Early Autumn (7), Autumn (6), Winter (1) and midwinter (8).

Each direction has its distinct basic Qi of expansion and contraction and therefore its specific attributes.

When you were born, your Number was in the center, or 5 Earth House of the square. Each year you occupy a different House, completing a whole cycle each nine years. Let us take the example of September 2001 and a person born under 9 Fire.

Tom is a 9 Fire and has to fly North in September 2001 to have a meeting. After several negotiations a contract can be signed. A contract is a document and a document falls under 4 Wood. 4 Wood is in the 1 Water House and the Water House shows Qi in its lowest possible point. The contract is not signed, because the airplane has a delay and has to remain at the airport. First look at Number 4 in the Water House of the Luo Shu. Besided documents, 4 Wood is also airplanes. Airplanes and documents are under low energy. 9 Fire does not seem to be travelling against the 5 for the year but as we look at the month square, there is more.

September 2001 is a 4 Wood month, so 4 Wood joins 8 Earth at the center of the Luo Shu. 8 Earth is a built structure, in this case maybe the airport. 4 Wood (airplane) is hooked to the airport. Tom is a 9 Fire and in the 1 Water House, joining the 4 Wood in its lowest energy for the month. If we were to advice Tom beforehand and have to choose between ‘contract’ or ‘airplane’ in distinguishing what may cause problems here, it is easy to see it is the airplane. If you look at the Water House you will see 4 and 9 there.

You could say: ‘9 Fire visiting a contract, but the contract is in its lowest possible point, so there must be something wrong with the contract”.

This square shows month Numbers to the right of the year Numbers. If you want to add day Numbers, the day Numbers go to the left of the year Numbers.

There is probably nothing wrong with the contract.

Look at the 4 Wood as airplane now and 8 Earth as a built structure. Look at the Numbers in the center and again see there is an airplane linked to a building. Now look at the House opposite the 1 Water House.

Here, in the 9 Fire House again there is an 8 Earth. If your Number is in any House of the Luo Shu and you expect ‘X’ to happen there, you can look at the opposite House to reflect on the type of experience ‘X’ will most probably be. So, using crossreferences and somewhat in order, this is what you do:

- 9 Fire is in the 1 Water House.
- 9 Fire visits 4 Wood in the 1 Water House.
- Both 9 Fire and 4 Wood must be in the lowest point
because 1 Water is dissipating energy.
- I know 9 Fire is the person, what does 4 Wood mean
(contract, airplane or any other 4 Wood attribute).
- Central House of the square show another 4, this also could
   be contract, but also airplane.
- Central House of the square shows an 8 Earth which is a
   built structure.
- It could be that the problem will arrise in the building in
which the contract is supposed to be signed.
- To determine this I look at the opposite Numbers.
- Opposite the 1 Water House is the 9 Fire House.
- In the 9 Fire House is another 8 Wood, confirming that I
have to anticipate loss related to a building.
- Also in the 9 Fire House is 3 Wood, one of its properties
   being computers or electricity.
- The most probable event here is that there is some
electricity problem related to a building, not the airplane
itself, causing the airplane to stay grounded.

We will keep it simple here, otherwise we could make other cross references, like – having seen so many references to the Numbers 8 and 4 – checking the Numbers in the 4 Wood and 8 Earth Houses. However, if you like to look beyond where a certain Number is in the Luo Shu and explore this type of advanced cross referencing, check out the book of Simon Brown at the end of this article.

General and personified directionology

We distinguish between general and personified directionology. Here, we are interested in how our personal Qi interacts with the general directional Qi.

The key question in directionoly is: “How does my own personal Qi resonate with a given environmental Qi”

Although the outcome would still be different in each individual case, certain directions can be classified auspicious or inauspicious no matter your astrological sign.

An example is, that - irrespective of my own Number – I want to know in which direction Number 5 is.

In whichever direction Number 5 is in the Luo Shu, we know that it is not advisable to travel into that direction. Travelling in opposite direction to where the 5 is in the Luo Shu is regarded even worse.

As a consequence, it would also not be advisable to sit, work, sleep or take initiatives into these directions. Apart from other more individual rules, this is a basic technique which is true for all of us.

Let us first concentrate on the basic Luo Shu for some basic general directionology.

This example ignores specific Qi for any year and does not consider personal Qi yet. The examples given here are just to give you a basic idea on directionology, so please be advised that this is the most basic and most static form of directionology and you may not follow up on the advice given in this section, unless you otherwise made sure that the direction mentioned here are not inauspicious for the Qi of a year, your personal Qi and furthermore that these directions do not disagree with the Xuan Kong Feng Shui flying star chart of your house.

The next section shows the basic Qi of the eight directions, not how your personal element will react to this Qi. If you are a 6 Metal, apart from what is being mentioned under South, you will be moving towards a Fire direction and Fire is controlling your basic energy. The Fire controlling your basic energy may or may not be desirable, because this depends not only on your Nine Star Ki Numbers, but also on your Four Pillars of Destiny chart and your physical and emotional well-being.

In Four Pillars of Destiny, other rules and dynamics prevail that may or may not agree with the principles discussed here.

Basic directionology

The basic Luo Shu has Number 5 in the center and it is this square we refer back to, whichever other Number may be occupying the square for a year, month, day or hour. 3 Wood is always in the East, 9 Fire is always in the South. Luo Shu shows the Numbers in their static positions and is said to more or less accurately resemble China’s topography: mountains to the Northeast, yellow soil in central China etc.. We have to adjust according to our own localities, but the Luo shu also follows the sun pattern and this bit can be applied in basic directionology.

East
Dominating trigram is Thunder (Zhen), giving the idea of impuls and sudden action. We have sunrise in the East, which makes this direction one for growth and emerging warmth. As a reaction to sunrise, nature is triggered to come alive again and if we want to tap into this creative energy, we may sit facing East or move into the East. If we need to tap into the world of ideas, impuls, communication, inventions, any short projects – like in certain professions – we may consider locating our desk in the East.

East is also the time of Spring. Spring is clearly the time after Winter and Midwinter, so also the time when contemplation, withdrawal, is behind us and the East may be used for our forward and outward initiatives. East is a good direction for pioneering and new beginnings. 3 Wood is the time for emerging yang. Yang emerging is found in anything, like herbs. If you want to leave Winter behind, you may go outside and collect herbs. Young herbs may appear tiny, yet they already contain the Qi of the fully grown plant. If you take in herbs when they are still in their sprouting stage you will absorb their potential growth and therefore the ability to finish your projects. Some way of bringing your Qi in resonance with the environmental Qi.

Southeast

Trigram is Wind (Xun) and like the East, Southeast is good for growth, because it depicts Late Spring or Early Summer. Xun is good for initiative that you like to see branched out into several directions and for social activities., like expressing yourself in front of an audience. Direction of patience and compassion.

South
Trigram is Fire (Li) and it is the direction of fully grown energy. Fire is high Summer. South is good for planning, as the sun has the property of overlooking everything. Flames can be seen from over a wide distance, so it is said South is good for presentations, fame, motion, passion and going into the world to meet new challenges and people.

Southwest
      T
rigram Earth (Kun) or mother. Direction for fruition and consolidation, Late Summer. Good to concentrate on studies and withdrawing for self-education while still very much in contact with your community. If the creative stages of East and Southeast have gone in a desirable way, and your planning was done right, the Southwest will ensure healthy fruit and good preperation for harvest. Good direction if you seek stability, and for conventional activities that do not allow to much suprises like meetings and team building.

West

Trigram Marsh (Dui) or Lake. Sun is lower in the skies as Early Autumn arrived. It is not time to harvest yet, but it is a good direction for evaluation of past and future. Direction for philosophical reflections, but still very much on the light side. Good direction for consolidating your love relationship. This direction is said to give good financial results.

Northwest
Trigram Heaven (Qian). This is a good direction if you need to tap into mechanical thinking and masterminding. If you need to be orderly and disciplined, the Northwest provides the necessary Qi because it carries the cutting energy of Autumn. Good direction whenever ethical thinking and leadership is required. Good for order, employement or expanding your business.

North
Trigram Water (Kan) and season of Winter and withdrawal of Qi. This direction is not favourite for any outward initiative, but it is great for any inner initiative. Temperature in the North is cold, so it is a good direction if your love relationship needs mending. You’ll sit and sleep tightly together. Good direction for maintenance and contemplation. Good for recluse, like when you need to think things over or want to produce writings.

Northwest
Trigram Mountain (Gen) and Midwinter. Good direction to focuss on future matters, just before the beginning of Spring and yet another impuls.

Good direction if you need to burn old ships and need to really let go of things that had been frustrating a fresh start.

Again, this will only give you a basic sense of direction, timing and Qi resonance. You may not blindly use these directions or use them as the foundations for any of your initiatives. Many different considerations come into play, like when you are travelling or choose to have your residence in the Northwest, what other features are there in your destination. Northwest is 6 Metal, but are you also travelling towards a mountainous area or towards the sea.

Basically, Qi is waxing in the Northeast, East, Southeast and South, providing a good layer for activities that ask for social communication, impuls, creativity and outward action. Southwest, West, Northwest and North show waning Qi, giving good foundation to more yang, stable and carefully planned activities.

The center depicts stability, but it is an undesirable position to locate yourself in within a building because all energies gather in the center, probably giving you a feeling of restlessness and weakening your ability to focuss on any particular subject. In general, it is better not to travel when your Number is in the center of the Luo Shu, although in some months it can be done.

Positioning yourself in space

What is meant by ‘facing’ a certain direction or travelling into a certain direction depends on the position your body is in. It is also important to have a good perception of what ‘center’ means. Your body is like the armchair setting in Form School Feng Shui, where your spine functions as the Black Turtle, your left and right side as your Green Dragon and White Tiger respectively and the front part of your body as your Ming Tang.

Active You are awake. Your chakras actively and directly interact with the planet, while your spiritual canal (running exactly through the middle of your body vertically from your crown chakra down to your base chakra) maintains active interaction with Heaven and Earth Qi. Your body resembles the earth’s magnetic field and has a plus pole and minus pole. Your solar plexus is the deciding factor in determining which direction you are facing as it is this spot of your body through which you take in directional Qi.
Passive You are asleep. The direction your head – or crown chakra – is pointing into is taken as your ‘travelling’ or ‘facing’ direction. Here, your spiritual canal interacts with the earth and your chakras are taking in Heaven and Earth Qi to restore vitality.

Passive Directionology Active Directionology

Although omnipresent, for practical application consider Qi travelling towards a center from all directions. Always consider yourself to be in the exact center of the world taking in Qi from all directions. You are surrounded by all eight directions, taking in energy from Heaven and Earth and the eight directions. You are also sending out energy into all these directions, maintaining a dynamic interaction between your own magnetism and the ever changing magnetism of everything surrounding you. If you are travelling South your starting point is the center. Once you arrived South and want to travel into any other direction, again you position yourself as being in the center. Qi needs a reference point. One of the properties of Qi is that it – by laws of gravity - travels towards a center. For any built structure the center is the physical center. The human body is another reference point for Qi, irrespective of where you are, inside or outside a building, you are always in the center.

Directionology for sleeping is not as clear cut as for activity, because virtually no-one will sleep on their backs and maintain that position during sleep. The headboard of your bed is the deciding factor.

Also, how two people position themselves in space when interacting, determines how much Qi is emitted between them. If you are in love and sitting right in front of each other, your solar plexus will be connected, whereas when you are walking a beach, any interaction between you will be much less.

Generally, we like to face our auspicious directions and avoid facing or travelling into inauspicious directions. One source claims that we should face our inauspicious direction, the reasoning behind this being that it is better to face your enemy, than to sit with your back to the enemy.

However, this is not how the armchair setting of our body was designed and it may stem from Yin Zhai Feng Shui i.e. Feng Shui for gravesites, where the deceased person is positioned with feet towards their auspicious direction. Then, when the person wakes up from the dead and sits up, his solar plexus will be readily positioned towards his auspicious direction.

Also, the technique of facing your enemy may have stemmed from martial arts strategies, but following this reasoning would not only mean we have to face the enemy, but also that we are supposed to travel into our inauspicious directions. This does not make sense.

Number 5

Before we move on to more personified directionology, let us first introduce probably the main general rule in Nine Star Ki directionology, which says not to travel into the direction of Number 5 and not to travel in opposite direction of where the 5 is. This rule is irrespective of your own Numbers.

As a Number – or Qi influence rather – 5 is too strong and powerful, it is too yang. It can trigger great things, but it can also ruin all things. Apart from yet other dynamics that may be positive, 5 is looked upon as a Qi with a powerful ability to cause disaster. Both Nine Star Ki and Feng Shui directionology have a special eye out first for wherever the 5 is. Its reputation
                                                                     is not good at all.

You are not supposed to travel into the direction of 5 because you will be moving towards an energy that is too intense. In the above square for the year 2000, the annual 5 is in the North.

You are also not supposed to travel away from where the 5 is, here South, because the Qi there is extremely yin, expanded and not focussed. Especially when you suffer from an already yin ailment, you do not want to travel away from the 5. You may feel ‘endlessly lost in space’ and find it hard to regain the ability to think straight. Because you moved into an extreme yin direction, causing your mind and body to become equally yin, you may attract all kinds of yang events, like accidents, robberies etcetera. Take precautions.

When we accept that 5 can cause disaster, disaster will be right in front of you if you travel into the 5 and any disaster when travelling away from the 5 will suprise you, be sudden and coming from behind.

When you are travelling towards the 5, this direction is where intensity gathers, impacting your system to become likewise intens and contracted. You may encounter events that follow up on each other too fast, causing you to make decisions too fast. This may affect your judgement and cause all kinds of problems and mistakes.

It is an understatement to say that accidents are not uncommon when people or objects move into the Number 5, especially when moving fast and over a longer distance.

Where 5 is also a community, you will travel towards a community – but to probably end up with confrontation – when you move into the North. When you travel away from the 5 it may also mean moving away from a community and seperation.

5 is the center, possibly pointing to your own center also, meaning great inner difficulty and inner seperation, here of course meaning dissociation and anxiety.

I learned to have great ‘respect’ for the Number 5 and I treat it like one would treat a dragon. A dragon can be very nice, depending on its mood. It can be quite vicious and fierce.

Other Stars may be also dragons, likewise harmful or auspicious, but at the least one can anticipate their intensity and impact.

Look upon 5 as a dragon sleeping under water. We do not know when or in what mood it will wake up and surface. All other Stars have limitations because they can be tracked down to a specific direction, their influence largely determined by the limitations imposed on them by the Qi of these direction. Number 5 may be in the center in the basic Luo Shu, but Number 5 is in the center wherever it appears in the Luo Shu, calling the shots.

While travelling towards or opposite any Number, looking at the Number(s) in the opposite House may give an indication of the kind of problems you may encounter. In the case described here, you would anticipate on problems having to do with 4 Wood.

Amongst other things 4 Wood may point to airplanes, documents, contracts, eldest daughter, communication, entertainment, transport, travel, projectiles, hights, wooden structures, schools.

Your own number

Travelling towards or opposite your own Number is the next do not in Nine Star Ki directionology. Travelling towards the direction your own Number is in is much less yang than travelling towards the Number 5. Suppose your Number is 1 Water, then in this square you would not be travelling Northwest. Travelling Northwest here means you are travelling into your own Qi and this may obstruct the goal of your journey especially when your trip had a purpose. This is because you may experience a feeling of isolation from yourself and the world surrounding you and become introvert. Other people will not notice you and you may feel ignored and experience identity crisis. An inner confrontation with yourself may occur and you may feel that a decision is being forced upon you because you are opposite Number 8 that has revolution as one of its properties. Other associations of 8 Earth may be decision, sudden stillness, built structure, caves, mountainous areas, a piece of land, possessions.

Travelling away from your own Number may give you a feeling of being endlessly lost. It is very hard to focuss on everything because for clear decisions you need your own Qi and you are travelling away from it, so to speak. You may harvest the opposite of what you aimed for. It may be hard to hold on to perspective, something you may need because travelling towards 8 Earth may confront you with a decision of any kind.

Number opposite its own house

Each year, one of the Numbers will occupy a House in the Luo Shu that is opposite its original House in the basic Luo Shu. In 2000 the Number 7 is in the East, opposite its standard House in the West in the basic Luo Shu (7).

Here we have to anticipate opposite results for our actions. In the case of Number 7, the opposite result could be in financial matters or managment. The money you invest should be monitored to end up and be used the way you intended. Negotiations done in 2000 on an East-West axis may fail.

Home is where my food is

If you look upon our planet as a living structure – ‘living’ not used here as a cliche, but Living, with its own dynamic magnetism and if you accept that the ‘chemistry’ between universal Qi and your personal Qi is ever changing, then you will find it easy to understand that food – or better still blood - is the link.

Blood acts as the entenne between your own organism and Heaven and Earth Qi. Like with a radio, the entenne needs to be pointed exactly right in order to receive the perfect signal.

Knowing what and how to eat is the ultimate art of Human Luck and has been the missing dynamic in our Time (Heaven Luck) and Space (Earth Luck) studies. It is only logic.

We can classify food into yin and yang and the five transformations. In its most basic approach, Yin food is defined as food containing more calium, yang food as food containing more natrium. Our blood should be best having a balance of 1 natrium-7 kalium.

The same dynamic can be found in the measurements of our human body, the head being a seventh part or our body, the hand being one seventh part of the arm.

Whole rice is seen as our human body’s mirror image, as it is one seventh part below the ground and the rest above the ground and has the nearest 1:7 balance. It is for this reason that whole grain is taken as the basic food that should be producing our blood and body cells.

Yang food is generally more warming or contracting. Yin food is generally more cooling or expanding. Food growing downward is generally more yang, food growing upward is generally more yin.

Physical and metaphysical yin-yang classification

Please be advised that any classification into yin and yang is relative and can be sometimes confusing. I use the yin-yang classification as introduced to the west by George Oshawa (Nyoti Sakurazawa).

Physically the liver is a yang organ, because it is solid and most materialized, contracted. Metaphysically, however, the liver is yin, as any practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine will tell you, because the liver meridian is yin, producing a yang physical organ. Likewise, the stomach meridian has yang energy, producing a hollow – yin and expanded – organ.

The best way to explain the difference between a physical or metaphysical approach when we classify yin and yang, may be using the Heaven trigram (Qian) and the Earth trigram (Kun) as an example.

The Heaven trigram contains of three solid – yang – lines. It shows any condition in its ultimate phase of contraction. It is physically the most yang trigram, showing centripetal force, yet metaphysically it is the most yin, because it depicts Heaven, the most expanded idea in our yin-yang studies.

The Earth trigram contains of three broken – yin – lines. It shows any condition in its ultimate phase of expansion. It is metaphysically the most yin trigram – showing centrifugal energy and the idea of receptiveness, however physically it is the most yang, because the planet is solid.

Depending on our line of studies, sometimes yin-yang classification can be taken as cause, sometimes yin-yang classification can be taken as effect.

Yin and Yang classification of food is taken from its effect on our bodies. If we take in yang food, our condition becomes yang. If we take in yin food, our condition becomes yin.

Let us reflect on the saying: “Extreme Yang produces Yin, extreme Yin produces Yang”.

Cold is yin in comparison to hot which is yang.

In polar regions the atmosphere is extremely yin, producing extremely yang vegetation. In polar regions the cold is so extreme, that this extreme yin produces yang, contraction. In tropical regions the atmosphere is extremely yang, producing extremely tall – yin – trees. In tropical regions the sun is extremely yang, producing extreme yin vegetation.

Yin and yang are never in perfect balance, but will always seek to restore balance.

When we live in polar region, the atmoshpere there is extremely yin and cold. In order to balance this and function well in this environment we need to take in more yang – warming and contracting - foods. Polar diet can consist of almost only meat and fish, that are more yang.

Extreme yin is extreme expansion. We would not function in a cold climate when we eat too much yin – cooling and expanding – foods, like fruit. Yin and yin repel. If we are in an extreme yin – or cold – environment and we cannot take in yang food or are not in the vacinity of a heater, this dynamic is shown by our body itself that in reaction to seek balance, will try to yanginize by making itself smaller.

The sun in tropical regions is extreme yang, having a yanginizing effect on us. In order to balance this and function well in this environment we need to take in more yin foods.

A pumpkin having grown in a warm and sunny region is much bigger – more yin and expanded – than a pumpkin having grown in a colder region, being more yang. If I live in Scandinavia and take in a pumpkin from Spain, the difference in latitue is too big. I will take on ‘resonance or condition of a Spaniard’ and develope a desire to spend holidays in Spain.

The idea is that the more yang a certain food is, the farther it can be away from our original environment. Salt is most yang and can be gathered from virtually anywhere, whilst the water we drink should have come exactly from where we live.

The trick is to choose your food according to latitude and stay within a 50 kilometers North-South range. If you live in London, any food from Amsterdam is more agreeable than the same type of food from Italy.

Image taken from: http://www.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/index.html

Earth magnetism is different everywhere on the planet, but the farther away from your own latitude, the greater the difference between energies of Heaven and Earth and your own specific Qi resonance. When you live in the 1A region and you have to choose food from the 1B, 1C or 2 region, 1B and 1C would be more agreeable to your own Qi resonance than 2. The best thing for you to take in from your destination would be water from that region. If you cannot get water from the region you will be travelling to, try other foods from that region but containing water, like vegetables and fruits.

As an organism our human body needs to build up and maintain a certain resistence.

The general idea when we think of ‘resistance’ is the resistance we should have against sickness. Looking upon resistance from a much larger perspective, it means resistance against Qi frequencies that are too far distanced from our own resonance. This Qi could be in the form of us not having resistance agains problems or fluctuations in our destiny.

In our modern world we have the ability to move fast over greater distances. We may even choose to permanently leave our country and migrate to another country. If we do, we should keep in mind that we need to take in the food basic to that new environment, in so doing adjusting our Qi. If we made a permanent move to another country, but maintain the diet that we had in our country of origin, we may have moved our physical body to a new environment, yet our Qi is left behind. We will be hardly able to adapt to the new environment and gradually develop weaknesses.

The farther away from our original latitude, the more problems with our constitution and condition.

Travelling in enclosed environments – like automobiles, trains or airoplanes – is extremely yanginizing. Whenever possible, leave a window open and take in some yin foods, like juices, fruit or vegetables. Take the same precaution whenever you are travelling into a direction that is too yang or into a hot climate.

Travelling in ancient times

In practising directionology you may soon come to an amazing conclusion. Almost no direction – or sometimes only one single direction – is auspicious. It happens that only one direction, e.g. North, is auspicious at a given time. To return home you would then have to travel South and this could be inauspicious.

Directionology was developed in ancient times from Qi observation. People would not be travelling, sometimes their entire lives. When I left my village and returned after 30 years, the same girl would probably live in the same house.

When these people had to travel, they would be travelling very slow, either by walking or on the back of an animal.

This way it was maybe not too detrimental to be travelling into an inauspicious direction, because of the slow and steady movement – and so steady adjustment to each new environment – and the fact that they would not be covering widely apart distances over too short a time period.

Each night they would sleep in a spot closer to their travelling goal, yet still not much away from the location they had left that morning. In other words, Qi resonance of the original location did not differ much from the Qi resonance of the location I am in now, I am still ‘home’.

This then enabled them to take in the Qi of the stars of that particular time and place and take in the water and food from that environment, taking in and assimilating Qi resonance of a particular location.

If you allow yourself to adjust to the environmental Qi and the Qi of water and food, your blood eventually takes on a similar quality and your personal Qi will start resonating as if you had been from that environment all along.

Directionology is just a matter of magnetism and affinity between my personal Qi and environmental Qi. Masters of Time and Space knew, not about laws of astronomy or mathematics, but they were well aware of the laws of biological and physiological transmutation and knew how to maintain a healthy body and clear judgement by choosing the right food.

If your most detrimental direction was to be North, but you had to move into the North, you have to understand that the locality you are travelling to is not at all detrimental to the people actually living there. The Qi of that people is in perfect resonance with the Qi of that environment. If you were to bring your personal Qi to resonate with the Qi of that environment, travelling to or arriving at that locality would not be detrimental or harmful to you.

Slowly changing your own Qi resonance, in order for it to take on the same frequency, would give you the same Qi resonance and you would not be travelling into an inauspicious direction anymore, on the contrary you would be travelling ‘home’, your body ‘recognizing’ this Qi.

Also, this type of travelling allowed plenty of time for a once harmful direction to have been over time changed into another one of your auspicious directions.

Contra-measures

Don’t worry, over the centuries this theory evolved, also many contra-measures were found to try weakening harmful effect of travelling into an inauspicious direction. Some of these measures are practical, some of them are too fantastic or radical to be practical or desirable even, like the one – in an attemt to ‘undo’ karma - claiming that one should travel around the planet in the exact opposite direction of the initial direction too nullify any harmful effect. Even if we agree that this works, this technique would not be anywhere near practical.

In this day and age the principles for directionology may be as valid as they had been around the time they where found, but we have to deal with certain limitations.

Time is a very limited resource in our modern world, where we cannot decide to go on holiday today and return in one year when the ‘Numbers’ are positioned better. Even if you wanted to, you would have a hard time explaining and convincing your employer.

Also, when we travel, we are often dependent on prescribed travelling schedules and routes. No pilot will adjust and take a different route only because you tell him “we’re flying against the 5”. But, if you had the choice and you had to travel North, but North is detrimental, travelling Northwest first and then Northeast would be an option.

This way, you would not directly confront the Star in the North, but instead moving towards the Stars in the Northwest and Northeast, probably much less inauspicious at that time.

Secondly, the quality of your blood is the determining factor and is what ultimately does the trick, so if you cannot avoid travelling directly North, make sure you are in good health and that you are not tired.

Whether in Nine Star Ki or Feng Shui, one’s own Qi resonance is crucial and the ultimate deciding factor.

In Feng Shui, the same house will have a different impact on different people. Any inauspicious Feng Shui situation will not have the same harmful effect on a person that has powerful and healthy personal Qi, at least not nearly as much as it would a person with Qi resonance that is less resistant to harmful Qi. It is like wearing the proper clothing against cold weather, wind and rain. The weather is the same to anyone, but the question is how the weather impacts each one of us.

If you are tired, under heavy stress or experiencing illness, you are more vulnerable to negative external influences because you are not ‘yang’ enough to counter.

So, watch your diet, especially intake of more yin foods like sugar, chocolate, alcohol, medication or chemical foods in general. Do not eat food that was prepared in a micro-wave, but use old fashioned fire to ensure yang and energized food.

If there is no way around travelling into your inauspicious direction, leave some money behind with friends just in case an emergency arises while travelling into or having arrived at your destination. If you are travelling into an inauspicious direction, go over things more than once when you prepare your trip. Did I pack my passport, did I bring my keys or ticket, is the car allright.

Make sure you arrive at the airport or railway station on time. Also check other people and confirm appointments. Are the people you need in the right spot at the right time.

Especially if you have to travel into your worst possible direction on a worst possible day, do not pack things that you cannot do without in your larger luggage. Leave precious things home or carry them tight to your body. You do not want your luggage to catch another plane.

Another technique to avoid problems, is to consider having your trip organized or ticket booked by someone who’s Numbers are located in the Luo Shu better than yours. This person may have better luck in the destined direction. If your Number is in the Water House, for instance, and you have to travel North, ask a friend to make travel arrangements for you. Time of departure and other specific things important to the trip will be then determined by this person’s Qi.

See further down and look for any fourth animal away from your own Chinese zodiac sign (year sign is taken here for compatibility reasons). For instance, if you are a Rat your most auspicious relationships in love and business will be with Dragon and Monkey.

Have a person born under either of these signs book the trip for you and take you to the airport. You can carry the luggage.

Your most inauspicious Chinese animal sign is six animals away from your own. If you are a Rat – belonging to North – do not have your trip booked by a Horse person – belonging to South -, especially if South coincides with the ‘Grand Duke’ for that particular year.

By far the best trick of them all, at the same time in most cases probably the most difficult, is to bring your personal Qi resonance in resonance with the Qi resonance of your destination, as much as three weeks prior to the moment you actually leave home.

This technique is based on the fact that the Qi of your destination is not having negative impact at all to people living and thriving there, because the way they eat is in accordance with their environmental Qi.

Travelling is not a matter of moving your body from point A to point B. By travelling or positioning you are imposing a biological-physiological event on your system. In this technique you might have someone send you food that came from your destination. Start eating and drinking some food, three weeks prior to your departure. In this way, your blood will have taken on a different Qi quality and you will be travelling ‘home’, rather than into another country.

Other precautions, like making sure the Feng Shui of your house is in optimum condition, are also proposed.

Some use affirmations to minimize the effect of travelling into a detrimental direction. I am comfortable with the idea of visualization, because it is the way our human nervous system works. However, when I am in a martial arts tournament, I can do whatever affirmation, it will not make my opponent dissapear or even loose any of his skills.

My affirmations control my own body’s physiology, telling it exactly which hormons to allow into my system and which not. Remember, however, that this technique does not influence my opponent’s physiology. But it has been researched, documented and proven that the human mind does play a role in the outcome of events. Some will use affirmations, meditations, mudra’s or mantra’s to influence the trip or the outcome of the trip. When I travel I try to keep my lips together and my tongue against my teeth.

Impact of travelling

Because directionology is about my alignment with the earth magnetic force, it is only natural that a permanent move will have more impact, than a short trip into town. If you have to make a trip into a harmful direction and you are planning a prolongued stay in your destination, it is advised to travel halfway and remain there for 49 days. Let us again use the example of the North. As you remember, you are advised to travel into the Northwest first and then proceed your journey into the Northeast. In between, and before you proceed, you will take a 49 days rest to adjust.

We see this figure of 49 re-occur in all kinds of Qi studies. In Xuan Kong Feng Shui an important technique is used in which the roof of a house is removed in order for the house to adopt a new horoscope. Some say the roof must come off at least 24 hours, before a new flying star chart for the house is justified, others mention days, weeks or months even. Re-occuring here also is a time period of 49 days.

Because the ancients well understood that our personal Qi has to be in alignment with the earth magnetic force and because they knew the deciding link between Heaven and Earth Qi and Man Qi was food, I believe the 49 days are likely to be pointing to some biological-physiological reality. Our blood, for instance, totally renews itself each 30 days, so after 49 days, surely our whole system should have had sufficient time to adapt to any new environment.

It is only natural that the House of the Magic Square that you find your Number in for the year is much more influencial than the House that your Number will be in for a month or day. Keeping with the big picture, you would probably not rely on the day Number for permanent decisions. Please understand, however, that the Annual stars are quite powerful, but that this does not mean at all that day or hour Numbers are without impact. Also day and hour Numbers can trigger great effect and can cause events to happen, because any Qi you are moving into or away from will also impact your temperament and decisions.

Without conceptualizing Qi and certainly without quantifying Qi – because naturally this cannot be done -, we can try to determine our do’s and do not’s for initiative by estimating the probable intensity and impact of year-, month- or day Numbers.

Use Year Number for permanent movement.
Use Month Number for shorter movement.
Use Day Number for impulsive movement.

Impulsive movement may mean many things, it applies to sudden opportunity, helping or at least not stagnating a greater goal. It can be a telephone call you make. Please, do understand that day Numbers can have permanent impact.

This square shows a 6 Metal day in a 7 Metal month in a 9 Fire year. Look at where the 5’s are: Annual 5 in North, Monthly 5 in East, Daily 5 in Southeast.

Suppose you want to plan a trip or any other initiative on this day. If you are moving over greater distance and you are planning to stay at your destination for a prolongued time, then you will best not decide to move into the North (directly). You will also not do so if you want to have something done in the North and you want for this initiative to be successful and lasting over a longer period of time.

You also like to avoid travelling East, because Number 5 is in the East for the month and pretty influencial. Although you will be probably facing some difficulty, if you have to, you could decide to move into the Southeast, as long as you take precautions and anticipate on possible problems prior to your action.

The effect of travelling towards or away from the 5 may be the most long lasting, also if you decide to start any project that you would like to survive for longer times, you like to avoid challenging the 5, like when you start a relationship, a business, moving your home.

Directionology is fun and should be nothing more than that. It is a tool that helps us realize that we have free choice at all times and that we have control over the 5 transformations and yin and yang and the energies surrounding us.

The ultimate goal of our knowledge of directions should be that we truly feel free to travel into whichever direction without fear, choosing success if you want to, choosing problems if you want to.

Remember we use a compass in directionology and the purpose of a compass is to have you on your feet and moving, not remaining in one location out of fear.

If your personal Qi – organs, body functions, meridians, chakras, emotional condition – is harmonious, you will be able to adapt yourself to any energy. When you are seriously tired or experienced significant Qi imbalance, even your best direction may give you some difficulty.

Dealing with jetlag

Much can be said about jetlag. Jetlag occurs when we travel over a great distance at enormous speed. Here, no opportunity is left for our body to adapt.

One particular explanation I picked up along the way is that, whenever I am jetlagged it means that my body has arrived but my soul did not. My soul is not catching up, so to speak, and so jetlag is a type of dissociation. One of the ‘cures’ to do on arrival is to position my solar plexus into the direction of origin and rub and massage my head and crown chakra while calling out my name aloud a few times. Be sure no-one is around when you do this.

Chinese zodiac directionology

You may want to combine Nine Star Ki directionology with techniques used in Chinese astrology.

Twelve Earthly Branches

Here are the Twelve Earthly Branches, commonly known as the 12 animal signs of the Chinese zodiac. Each Earthly Branch is assigned 30 degrees over the chinese compass or Luo Pan. A person born in the year of the Rat will have most affinity with Qi from the North. Qi from the South may not be looked upon as hostile to Rat, but it is the least auspicious Qi. The South has a different ‘agenda’ than the North. Rat has most affinity with Dragon and Monkey. You may wish to extend this example to your own year Branch and count away four signs from your own sign to find your affinity signs and six Branches away from your own sigh to find the energy frequency that is least auspicious to you.

Here I projected the octagon sometimes used in Japanese Nine Star Ki within the Chinese compass, or Luo Pan. The Chinese Ba gua – or octagon – shows eight directions of 45 degrees each, whereas the Japanese version may show 30 degrees in the cardinal direction to include one Chinese zodiac sign and 60 degrees in the secondary directions to include two Chinese zodiac signs. There is no difference however in the actual degrees the signs cover over the compass, as both the Chinese and Japanese versions use 30 degrees for each Chinese zodiac sign.

Cosmograph and Jupiter

The earth’s rotation causes for 12 distinguishable energies to surface from different directions. To link these energies to certain planets the ancient Chinese first designed the cosmograph. The cosmograph dates from the Former Han dynasty, and can be considered the grandfather of the later Chinese compass or Luo Pan.

It shows the coupled rotatable Heaven plate and the fixed Earth plate we still find on the Luo Pan and it was a rather more astrological than astronomical device for observing the skies and in particular the journey of Jupiter. It also followed the great Dipper through the 28 Lunar lodges, but its main purpose was maybe to chart the motion of Jupiter.

Several techniques for positioning and directionology were adopted by the San Yuan Feng Shui school from the San He Feng Shui system during late Ming Dynasty. One is Tai Sui or Grand Duke of Jupiter.

Jupiter is the Wood Star or sometimes called Sui Xing. It travels anti-clockwise along the Luo Pan, and progresses from Rat, Pig, Dog, Rooster etc. or North, Northwest, West respectively. This route of Jupiter cannot be observed from the earth, so a contra-Jupiter by name of Tai Sui was invented to determine Jupiter’s position.

Tai Sui travels in a clockwise direction along the Luo Pan and this path was followed on the cosmograph. It progresses from Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit etc. or North, Northeast, East respectively.

Tai Sui occupies the exact Branch of the year, its harmful influence covering the entire 30° of a Branch. Therefore, Tai Sui occupies the East in 1999, the year of the Rabbit. It will occupy the South in 2002, in the year of the Horse.

Tai Sui is an unfavourable direction to sit in of travel into, however it is less detrimental to sit with your back towards Tai Sui than it is to face Tai Sui. In itself, Tai Sui is not powerful to be harmful. It needs some action to be annoyed. So, it is advised not to ‘break the ground’ or have renovations done into the Tai Sui direction.

Miscellaneous

Directionology is not at all limited to actual travelling, or you facing or not facing a certain direction while awake or asleep. Directionology is the understanding that we are moving Qi the moment we seperate two phenomena that had been closely linked together and that we are moving Qi when one phenomenon is introduced to join another phenomenon. The moment we change Qi by our action, we are executing directionology, like when we move residence, take a trip, build a wall. Constructing a wall means you are playing with and changing Qi flow.

Directionology is planning of Time, Space and Action or: “Doing the right thing at the right Time and Place”. Doing the right thing at the right time and place and in the right spirit, is the ultimate performance of directionology.

- Directionology is also noticing why a particular person (Nine
Star Ki Number) called you on that particular day.
- Directionology tells you whom to contact or whom to avoid
contact with for certain directions or times.
- Directionology is knowing how to build a team around your
   choice of people.
- Directionology is knowing how to plan time, space and
action to reach a desired future goal.
- In Feng Shui, directionology furthermore means, the
direction your house is facing, location and direction of
your main entryway and interior doors, like that of master
   bedroom.
- Also in Feng Shui, directionology means location, direction
and time of placement of any items.
- Directionology is knowing how to activate or re-activate,
direct or re-direct Qi in built structures according to the
basic rules of Qi flow: strengthening cycle, controlling
cycle etc., and how to make the best use of this in diet,
acupunture and other systems for physical and emotional
   health.
- If you choose not to travel in the opposite direction of 5,
but you call someone who’s Number is opposite the 5 in the
Luo Shu, you may be considered to be travelling opposite
the 5 and it may be difficult to deal with this person.

Ultimate directionology comes from our memory. Memory does not just mean you remember anything from the past, because time is not linear. Cosmic memory means, you remember your future. Where did I come from and where am I going. Finding, planning and executing your – and perhaps other’s - Ultimate Life Dream is the main issue in any type of directionology.

Directionology is based on a firm understanding of ‘who I am’, ‘who you are’ and ‘where we are’. I have a territory that I can call mine. No-one is allowed into my territory without my consent and no-one is allowed to desintegrate my physical, emotional or spiritual integrity. Likewise, I will not desintegrate your integrity, nor will I desintegrate the Earth’s integrity. This way, Qi between people is emitted freely.

The Aboriginals have a saying: ‘The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth’. Supreme directionology is the understanding that the planet is our mother, the sun our father. Whatever the planet brings forth, is the Earth’s fruit, including peoples and their resources. We cannot continue to rape our mother, her children, her resources.
