Foreword : What is Face Reading? extracted from book The origins of face reading are lost in antiquity but the art has been recorded in China as long as the time of Confucius in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Various systems of face reading have since developed. Here we follow the Teaching of the Linen Robe, one of many schools no longer attached to any particular sect but still practiced by professional face readers in China and around the world. How valid is this art? Though face reading is pre-scientific, today’s genetic investigations are confirming the relationship between personality and temperament (even vocational predisposition) and the genetic structure that is unique to each individual. Our genomes, which determine our face shape, eye set, skin color and other physical characteristics appear to determine our life potential as shown in our features as well. What can face and feature reading do for you? Through face and feature reading you can get to know your own strengths and weaknesses, potentials and limitations. First, get to know yourself. Then make an effort to display your positive characteristics and downplay your negative ones. True, lifestyle also affects your features but weak spots need not be sore sports. Each of us has at least one fortunate feature, but no one is perfect. The secret is, through self-awareness and inner balance, to achieve rightness of the heart and inner glow.

Peter Shen's Face Fortunes is a thorough study on the facial anatomy and its relevance to the Chinese study of face reading, or Mian Xiang. Though this book showcases the faces of women, the studies learnt can be applied to both sexes.
