Explaining Myth
A fairly large amount of emails I receive are from people asking about the use of objects, colours, and numbers in the practice of Feng Shui. This is understandable as there is still a lack of resources available dedicated to the study of classical Feng Shui.

This is not to say that crystals or numbers have no significance at all. To be fair, today there are studies and research devoted to crystals and natural stones. However, these do not form any basis in classical Feng Shui studies.

All branches of Chinese Metaphysics, be it astrology, longevity, medicine, divination, or Feng Shui, is laid on the understanding of the ‘Cosmic Trinity’ of ‘Heaven’, ‘Earth’, and ‘Man’. Each of these three components is able to influence an individual’s Destiny.

So if you are asked, “Can Feng Shui solve all our problems?”

The answer, is quite simply, ‘NO’.

Feng Shui, belonging to ‘Earth luck’, is the study of environment’s Qi (or energy) and how a building receives this Qi. For one event to take place in Man’s destiny, the wheels of Heaven, Earth, and Man have to be aligned. While we have no control over Heaven’s will, the given factor, we have total control over our own actions and decisions, or ‘Man luck’. Feng Shui then comes in as the last key to influence events to a certain degree – maximise the good and minimise the bad.

So does Feng Shui work on a belief basis? Does it involve affirmations or chanting? Will it be considered blasphemous against your religion?

Once again, the answer is a resounding ‘NO’.

Firstly, Feng Shui is not a religion nor is it spiritual in nature. For example, we do not have to ‘believe’ in gravity in order for us to stay firmly on the ground, right? Although the ancient Chinese did not discover the ‘Law of Gravity’ per se, they did however, attribute forces that have a downward moving tendency as ‘Water Qi’. Energy that rises was termed as ‘Fire’. Inertia is synonymous with ‘Earth Qi’. Indeed, the ‘Five Elements’ were not referring solely to the actual, tangible elements, but conditions or phases of energy. This too is a wide misconception today that needs to be clarified.

Feng Shui for HomeBuyers Interior

Due to ancient Chinese beliefs, symbols and good luck charms are also included, somewhat carelessly, into the practise of Feng Shui today. Is it wrong to display Chinese characters (or whatever your native language) that represent ‘Happiness’, ‘Unity’, and ‘Good Fortune’? Of course not – but yet it is crucial to understand that symbols affect the psychology of the person, not the Qi of the house. Thus, symbols enhance ‘Man luck’ and not ‘Earth luck’. Obviously the Earth itself affects Earth Luck.

So what do you look for in Feng Shui? Mountains and rivers all play crucial roles. Remember, these were all originally part of the Earth before Humans. Mountains grew in a particular spot after being exposed to the gravitational pull of certain stars for a long period of time. Different mountain shapes were born from different clusters of stars having a gravitational influence on the Earth. Then Qi, the natural life force, began to permeate from the mountains to give life to its surroundings. This was the original point of study where Feng Shui began.

So, do we have to worry about what number our house is, or what colour to paint it? Not really, from a Feng Shui point of view. Find out instead where your house is located. That alone can tell you what kind of Qi governs the entire area. If your area has strong ‘Water Qi’ for example, simply living in a red house with the number 888, will make no difference whatsoever.
