| The Day My Nose Grew Bigger
|
|
We were in the elevator when my friend MK moved closer and peered at me as if I were the high lord of all aliens. After some time of intense observation she pronounced,
MK : “Your nose got bigger.”
Me : “Thanks, but I’m not sure if that was a nice thing to say.”
MK : “Of course it is!”
Me : “Okay.” Silence. “Why?”
MK : “The Chinese believe that one with a big nose will be rich.”
Of course. Every Chinese is a self-proclaimed fortune teller, never mind the origin of their information.
For the uninitiated, the skill of face fortune telling is called Mian Xiang in Chinese. It is categorised under physiognomy which is one of the five Chinese arts. The other four arts are mountain, medical, divination and destiny.
Why is Mian Xiang useful?
Let’s say you are minutes away from signing a very important business deal. The man sitting in front of you is grinning happily, eagerly awaiting your signature upon the dotted line. When you have a mortgage, your wife’s parents’ mortgage and three young children to feed, would you risk it all on a blind leap of faith?
Come on, wouldn’t you at least want to know if your future partner is not going to turn around and bite you where it really, really hurts?
Or you see a relative and somehow you could just feel that there is something wrong with her health yet she’s keeping mum. But of course there is no way to pin point what is wrong, short of a full medical check up on the spot.
Perhaps you met a guy at a party. Five minutes into conversation and you are already mentally ticking off possible babies names. Before you really do get carried away with dreams of happily-ever-after, wouldn’t it be nice to know if this man would be Mr. Right, Mr. Right-Now or Mr. Already-Married-With-Kids?
Admit it; it would be nice to know.
But why Mian Xiang?
Because it’s fun.
Because it’s instant.
Because it’s beneficial.
Though the art of ‘Mian Xiang’ was documented only during the time of Confucius, it has been around much longer before that. Aristotle himself further developed this art by examining the characters derived from the different features of the face, body and voice.
Face reading is not acknowledge as science but researches today are continuously finding links and associations between personalities and temperaments and the genetic structure that is unique to each individual. Like it or not, your face says something about you. The Chinese just take it one step further by analysing potential incidents.
Through Mian Xiang you can learn one’s strengths, weaknesses, potentials as well as limitations. You can decide there and then not to sign an agreement with a particular individual. You can cut your losses and run from a stranger who may hurt you. You can insist that your relative go for a body check up with specific examination on her kidneys. Not sure if the interviewee is right for the job? Want to know if someone is a habitual liar? Just look at their faces. Suspect that your partner is having an affair and had just left his lover five minutes ago? Check his eyelashes.
With ‘Mian Xiang’ you can prepare yourself for both pleasant and unpleasant incidents. The possibilities are endless.
Lips aren’t just for kissing
We were watching ‘Dirty Dancing : Havana Nights’ when MK whispered, “That main actor, Diego Luna – he lies a lot.”
I looked at her. “MK, you don’t even know this guy.”
“Yeah,” she replied, “but I don’t really want to. His lips are way too thin. He can’t tell the truth.”
Of course we will never find out know if what she said is true. But it made me want to learn more about Will Smith.

Shane from Boyzone needs to keep his temper in check
Shaved eyebrows? You don’t want to be messing with your temperament.
Nose rings are not a good idea also. Basically it makes your money trickle like a running tap. Leave the rings to the cow, you want your wealth.

Which of the two foreheads are in charge?
Is the president of your country the one with real power or is he just a puppet? The height of his forehead is a good indication of what really is going on.
Learn Mian Xiang!
So if you are like MK who delights in knowing a stranger before he said ‘hello’, then Mian Xiang is definitely a good choice of study. Who knows, perhaps one day you will spot a guy with a large fat nose, and the good news is that he is still single.
And my nose? Well let's just say that the boyfriend has been very generous.
